POLITICAL PARTIES IN NIGERIA
We have so many political parties in Nigeria and below are the Parties
and the information about them.
THE NIGERIA NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY
(NNDP).
The first
Political Party in Nigeria is THE NIGERIA NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY
(NNDP). It was formed in1923 and
under the leadership of Sir. Herbert
Macaulay, popularly referred to as “Father
of Nigerian Nationalism”.
This party won all the three seat in Lagos into the Legislative Council, in the
election into the Lagos Town Council when the elective principles was
introduced. Lagos Daily News was also founded by the Party.
NATIONAL COUNCIL OF NIGERIA AND CAMEROON
The NCDC was
formed in 1944. The first general
secretary was Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe .
At the death of Herbert Marcaulay, Azikwe
became the Presidentand when southern Cameroon
left Nigeria in August 1944,
the NCNC change its name to The NATIONAL
COUNCIL FOR NIGERIA
CITIZENS. This party was seen as a truly National party by some Scholars.
NOTHERN PEOPLS CONGRESS (NPC)
NPC was formed in 1951. It started as a cultural organization, Jamiyyar or Mutanem Arewa. The
party was dominated by the Hausa/
Fulanis, and Islam was the main focus. It ruled the Northern Nigerian
between (1951-1963). The leader was
the late Sir. Ahmadu Bello with,
Sir. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa as
deputy. The party produced the first prime minister of Nigeria.
ACTION GROUP
AG
was formed in1951 as the political
wing of Egba Omo Oduduwa ( a Yoruba
Cultural Organization). Its leader was Obafemi
Awolowo. It dominate the Western Region Political Scene for eleven years (1951-1962).
NATIONAL PARTY OF NIGERIA (NPN)
The NPN could be
seen partly as an off short of NPC. NPC
was the first Republic Political Party in Nigeria . The majority of
the leaders were from NPC.
UNITY PARTY OF NIGERIA(GNPP)
Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the founder
and Leader of UPN. Other founding
members were Chief Ajasin, Chief Bola Ige, Prof. Ambrose Ali (The first
executive governor of Bendel
State), Chief MCK
Ajuluchukwu, Alhaji Lateef Jakande
e.t.c. Chief Obafemi Awolowo was the presidential candidate for the
party. The party won governorship election in five states.
NIGERIA PEOPLES PARTY (NPP).
The leader
was Alhaji Adeniran Ogunsanya
(chairman of the party)). Dr. Obi Wali,
Chief J. Nwobodo, Chief Sam Mbakwe and, both won governorship election for
Anambra and Imo state respectively. Dr.
Nnamdi Azikiwe who later joined the party was nominated as the presidential
candidate.
GREAT NIGERIA PEOPLE’S PARTY(GNPP)
The party was formed by Ahlaji
Ibrahim Waziri. He left NPP to
form GNPP because of
misunderstanding over the presidential & chairmanship position.
PEOPLE’S REDEMPTION PARTY(PRP)
This party was formed
by Mallm Aminu Kano who was both the
party’s National Chairman and the Presidential Candidate. PRP was a minor party and succeeded in winning Governorship
Election in only Two state (Kano and Kaduna).
NIGERIA ADVANCE PARTY (NAP)
This party was
formed by Mr. Tunji Braithwaite, a Lagos
base lawyer. The party was registered after the 1979 elections and only
contested in the 1983 elections.
This party was unable to win any election.
SOCIAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY (SDP)
The National
chairman of this party was Chief Tony
Anenih. It has its registered offices at Abuja.
THE NATIONAL REPUBLIC CONVENTION (NRC)
Chief
Tom Ikimi was the National Chairman of the NRC and also it has its registered office at Abuja.
PEOPLE’S DEMOCRATIC PARTY (PDP)
The first chairman of PDP was Chief Solomon Lar. The party contest in the 1999 general election and controlled 21 state. They were also able to won
governorship election in 27 state (2003
election).
ALL NIGERIAN PEOPLES PARTY (ANPP)
The
chairman of the party was Alhaji Yusuf Ali, the party were able to won
governorship election in 7 state (2003
election).
ALLIANCE FOR DEMOCRACY (AD)
The
chairman of the party was Chief Mamma
Yusuf. The were also able to won governorship election in 1 state while APGA controlled 1 state (2003 election).
